Local bands are receiving a great opportunity

The local music scene is experiencing a resurgence, with many downtown and strip venues hosting music showcases and the well received Life is Beautiful festival.

Currently, local musicians have no local media outlet to introduce their musical style. In support of the PBS board’s strategic programming goal of “expanding access to the fine arts,” and piggybacking off their weekly showcase series, “artScene,” Backyard Sessions hopes to fulfill that goal of showcasing emerging musical artists in our community.

I got a special invitation to see part of the recording of one of these local bands. It was a great opportunity to see the special talent of Jordan Kate Mitchell and her group.

Across the nation, PBS stations are experimenting with mission-related local “niche” programs that are available exclusively on the web. They are expected to reach a younger demographic, and through cross promotion bring these audiences to some of our broadcast programs.

The strategic plan for artScene: Backyard Sessions is to create a branded web program that serves as an extension of a flagship broadcast series. Lessons learned from this web production effort will guide future station productions exclusively for the web.

The first season of Vegas PBS Backyard Sessions features 8 local performers. HaleAmanO, The Solid Suns, Jill & Julia, Sabriel, Jordan Kate Mitchell, American Cream, The Perks, and Play for Keeps.

This is an eclectic group of performers that highlight the many great styles and sounds from around our valley. The show plans to begin airing in the fall of 2014 and great web content,  promotions, and exclusives will roll out late summer.
