Eldorado Canyon is home to the historical Techatticup Mine. It’s the oldest, richest and most famous gold mine in Southern Nevada. Located just 45 minutes from the Strip in Las Vegas.
I went with my friends, and while they had their wedding photo-shoot, I spent some time walking around the shop and looking at everything.
First of all, this mining ghost town is called Techatticup, and it boasts a population of just 7 people. Nelson is right up the road. The property is pretty amazing, with so many photo opportunities! Old cars, houses, signs, etc dot the landscape. Your Instagram will blow up, for real. The owners have collected an amazing collection of smaller items as well.
A few movies have been filmed in this area. Why? Because it’s like a ghost town. Something you would definitely see in an old western movie. There are lots of cool things to see including old gas stations, hot rods, old buildings, antiques, and much more.
When you walk into the store, you will take about an 1 hr just taking pictures inside. It has so much antique stuff everywhere, it’s like a museum. They have stools like a little bar for you to sit and couches as well .
Eldorado Canyon visitors may not be aware they’re standing on ground that at one time epitomized the Wild West, a region deluged in riches and plagued by lawlessness, greed, and murder. The history of this Southern Nevada treasure was crafted in blood and gold.
Nelson, back in 1775, wasn’t Nelson but was called Eldorado by the Spaniards who made the original discoveries of gold in this area that is now Eldorado Canyon. A hundred years later the prospectors and miners of the day took over and established the notorious Techatticup Mine. Disagreements over ownership, management and labor disputes resulted in wanton killings so frequent as to be routine and ordinary. Despite the sinister reputation of the mine, it, along with others in the town produced several million dollars in gold, silver, copper and lead.
The area is accessible through the town of Nelson, Nevada off US 95 about 25 miles southwest of Las Vegas. The mines were active from about 1858 until 1945.
This town is so amazing, it’s great for any age. Who doesn’t like to learn about history and explore? We will definitely return to Nelson … Loved it and you will too. Take your camera and get ready for a fun filled adventure!
