Anyone who has spent any amount of time in Las Vegas will tell you how miserable it can be here in the summer. It gets so hot you can literally fry an egg on the street they will tell you. Well that might be true, but what else can you cook outside?
With the help of my friends Jeff Mayweather and Teghan, I decided to find out! I wanted to see if you could cook smores inside of a car parked out in the sun. So I bought the graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows and headed down to the Mayweather Boxing Club to try it out.
First things first, the three of us had to get them prepared. Of course we did this inside because at 110 degrees, I want to spend as little time outside as possible. Once that was done, we were all set and ready to go! Out the door we went and straight to Jeff’s car.
The key I figured was to put them right on the dashboard where they would get direct sun. We estimated about 10 minutes, so we went back inside to wait it out. Unfortunately, that didn’t seem like quite long enough, so we gave it another 10 minutes.
Going back out, they seemed about ready. The chocolate had all melted, and they actually looked pretty good. So what a better treat for a bunch of professional athletes than some super fattening smores! Fortunately, everyone seemed anxious to try them out and before we knew it they were all gone. Better yet, the reviews were pretty positive! Considering we cooked them in the car, I would consider that a success and it’s one more thing I can add to my cooking repertoire.
This was a pretty interesting experiment and one I would like to try again. I have heard you can actually cook cookies in a car as well, so that might be what we try out next. I would like to thank Jeff Mayweather for the use of his car and for helping me out in this task. I also want to thank little Teghan who is one of my favorite people in the world. She is such a beautiful little girl and always a lot of fun.
Although this was a fun time, it just goes to show how hot it can be in the desert. And while we were joking, the sun is not, so always show it proper respect. If you are going to be out in the heat for long periods of time, be sure to take plenty of water, let people know where you will be, and make sure to have a plan to get out of the sun if necessary. As for me, I will just wait another month or so before I spend my time outdoors.
